"THIRD SUB CLUB"

SCENERY PICTURES for modelling reference.
This is the trestle crossing the Greenhorn Creek valley below Skyline Siding. The trestle crosses from one ridge to another at the apex of a wide horse-shoe curve. This area is hard to access and is surrounded mostly by private property.
The high trestle is a great place to catch the drama of the heavy mountain railroad.
Climbing up from Weed, which is above Austin, the tracks cut through numerous hillsides before reaching Greenhorn trestle.

This cut is right before the bridge on the lower approach of the big horse-shoe curve.

The second big trestle on the east slope of Mullan Pass crosses Austin Creek above Skyline Siding. This trestle is either called Austin or Skyline, depending on who you talk to. Like Greenhorn, The trestle marks the center of a sweeping curve although this one is not quite a horse-shoe, but pretty close! The turn is about 160 degrees, very tight and the grade is really steep. The tracks run through several deep and winding cuts as they approach the trestle westbound.

Note the spilled cars at the edge of the bridge. 6 cars derailed when they "stringlined" into the curve and off the trestle, just before Independance Day in 2006. These photos were taken while shooting our MULLAN PASS train video there ON the 4th! A speed restriction was set up and the trains kept flowing, as the bridge had been undamaged by the wreck.

Above Skyline trestle the tracks hug a high cliff after the bridge until they turn into the east portal of the summit tunnel less than a mile up the hill.
Down the west slope from Blossburg Summit the scenery takes on a less rugged slope, and the tracks meander downgrade as they follow a creek through rolling meadows. The grade drops to the siding at Elliston Montana.
On the east side of the pass the tracks, follow a creek up the east slope through wider valleys before the hills close in below Austin. Here we see the grade as it climbs from the foothills out of Birdseye. Austin lays another mile to the southwest after the narrows in the lower right of the picture.

I will add some pictures of AUSTIN and the famous loops up to the Iron Ridge as soon as I fix my film scanner. I don't have digital pix of that area yet.

MORE pictures to come soon.
PLEASE feel free to get in touch to head out trackside or to come visit for train night.
