"THIRD SUB CLUB"

MULLAN PASS Railfan PHOTO SECTION 4.
A westbound waits for its new crew across form the station in Helena. The second unit is one of the "Kodachrome" SD45s from SP's failed merger with the Santa Fe. These colorful units were a popular catch on MRL trains in the 90's.
Even though the BNSF merger is still nearly a year away, a Santa Fe GP30 has wandered into BN country and is running across the MRL this day. It is at the helm of a short Boeing special as it awaits a new crew in Helena.
The foothills coming out of Helena give way to a wide, meadow-filled range that follows Austin Creek out of Birdseye. As the tracks turn southwest the land starts to close in and a canyon develops for a short distance, we call "the narrows". This westbound LM is approaching that gap. In a short distance it will pass through the gap between two mountains (one upon which I am standing to take this picture), and the train will pass through a series of reverse s-curves before straightening out into the siding at Austin.

This train has a bunch of SD45s on the point, plus an additional 4 units spliced into the middle of the train, about where the curve is. This shot was taken while filming Iron Horse America's Montana video series that is going into production soon.

A trio of BN SD40-2s and a GATX leasing SD40-2 can be seen winding downhill through the curves and rock cuts near Skyline siding. August 1995.
On an overcast day, we catch an eastbound "Z-train" (intermodal hotshot) decending accross Skyline Trestle. The rear of this stack / trailer train is still in Mullan tunnel. The strange cars at the head end of the consist are Boeing airplane "skyboxes."
The tracks above Skyline Trestle run through a series of reverse curves and small rock cuts before ducking into Mullan Tunnel. Here we see a westbound hauling up the grade away from the bridge. This train has unusually light head-end power. It most likely has a mid or end-of-train pusher set, but I cannot remember.
PHOTOS WANTED!!!!

We are going to have this as a photo section to highlight YOUR WORK! Since this is a Mullan Pass and MRL fan-site, in addition to the model railroad site, we should post photos from railfan people besides just me. Send us your cool Mullan Pass pictures, or MRL or Model RR pictures and we'll post 'em right here, and show the world how awesome you are! Scan 'em and send em. Thanks.

PLEASE feel free to get in touch to head out trackside or to come visit for train night.
